Peter Holmes Obituary (1927-2021) – Fresno, CA

Peter Holmes
November 7, 1927 – November 16, 2021
Fresno, California – Peter Neil Macleod Holmes, 94, died at his home in Fresno, California on November 16, 2021. He was born on November 7, 1927 in Los Angeles, California, to John Cecil and Mary (Macleod) Holmes. He married Jeanne Marie (Farrior) on September 16, 1953 in Fresno. Peter was born and raised in Westwood and spent his youth on Santa Monica Beach. He was a World War II veteran and joined the Marine Corps with several friends in 1945. He spent his two years mainly on Mare Island and Hunters Point as a military policeman. He spoke lovingly about his time in the corps and was dismissed as a corporal. After his service, he attended Pierce Junior College in the San Fernando Valley and became interested in agriculture. While at Pierce, Fresno State organized an agricultural school and he was invited to participate in the program. Since they would accept all the units he deserved, he gladly accepted. He earned a degree in animal science and after graduation ran the school’s dairy farm. He later moved into the grain brokerage business and then into the agricultural loan business. In 1979 he started his own company, Peter M. Holmes Co., Inc., which specialized in agricultural real estate loans.
Jeanne and Peter loved to travel and since Jeanne was a travel agent they could visit places all over the world including sailing boat trips with friends in the Adriatic Sea and the Greek islands. He often spoke of his time with Jeanne and other Fresno friends who were touring Europe for several months shortly after their marriage. They went skiing and competed in the Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy. Peter enjoyed traveling to Santa Cruz annually with the whole family, skiing regularly until the eighties and playing tennis with friends. He pioneered football in Fresno, although he never played, and organized the Malloch Soccer Club. He was early active in the San Joaquin Valley Ag Lenders Society and more recently in the Young Executives Club. He loved reading and gardening and had a wide circle of friends.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne, older brother John Cecil Holmes Jr., and younger sister Mary Jane (Jill) Leach. His ever-loyal companion and best four-legged friend, Lexington, a gold lab technician trained as a guide dog, died last year. He leaves behind three children, Kathy Beechinor (Jim), Peter Holmes Jr. (Chris) and Andrew Holmes (Kate), thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He enjoyed participating in his grandchildren’s activities and is missed by everyone. There is a private family service.
