Night closures of I-5 start Thursday for pavement repair in San Fernando Valley – Daily Breeze

The California Department of Transportation, Caltrans, is advising commuters and other motorists of scheduled nighttime closures of some lanes and ramps on Interstate 5 for pavement repairs in the San Fernando Valley starting Thursday, Feb. 2 and continuing through mid-2023.

Crews are laying down new concrete pavement at numerous locations along 11 miles of the I-5 from south of Hollywood Way in Sun Valley to as far north as Roxford Street in Sylmar.

Most of the work will be in both directions on I-5 between Hollywood Way and Roscoe Boulevard. The project includes replacing concrete slabs on freeway lanes, and repair and construction of asphalt pavement at more than 60 on-ramps and off-ramps. More than 136,000 linear feet of high-visibility, 6-inch-wide lane striping will be installed.

Lane closures will start at 11 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Feb. 2 through Feb. 4 and then again a week later on Feb. 9-10, Thursday and Friday. If Caltrans needs to, they will also close lanes on Saturday Feb. 11.

Lanes will reopen by 6 am on Fridays and by 9 am on Saturdays and Sundays. These will not be full freeway closures – lanes in both directions will stay open for traffic. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or operational reasons.

Some on-ramps and off-ramps in the work zone may be closed starting as early as 8 pm Detours will be provided when ramps are closed.

In addition, the Southbound I-5 Penrose Street off-ra,ps and on-ramps will be closed as early as 7 pm due to the need for an adjacent staging area for construction crews.

These repairs and upgrades are intended to increase the service life of the roadway and improve ride quality for travelers. The contractor on the $8.3 million project is CA Rasmussen Inc. of Valencia.
