Sepulveda Transit Corridor Partners released details on Wednesday of its plan for a “mega-project” to connect the San Fernando Valley, the West Side and eventually LAX with a high-speed transit line.
The group – consisting of Bechtel, Meridiam Infrastructure and American Triple I Partners – is one of two private teams that signed pre-development contracts with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Tuesday, along with LA Skyrail Express.
“Our team is proud to partner with Metro on this transformation project and we look forward to bringing energy and creativity to the table to deliver a solution for Metro and the people of Los Angeles. A key to this solution will be a first class traffic experience that is accessible with easy connections and enhances the community experience, ”said Keith Hennessey, President of Bechtel Enterprises, the financing and development group at Bechtel.
On March 25, Metro’s board of directors awarded Sepulveda Transit Corridor Partners a $ 69.9 million contract to further develop the concept. According to the proposal, more than 60% of the heavy railway concept would run underground and the rest would be mainly in an air section. According to the proposal, it would take travelers less than 20 minutes to get from the valley to the west side. The estimated cost is $ 10.8 billion.
Sepulveda Transit Corridor Partners said that Bechtel, together with engineering partners Mott MacDonald, TY Lin and Systra, will lead the development and constructibility of the transit concept. The group will work with more than 25 “disadvantaged business enterprises”. In partnership with Metro Training Academy, it will also offer staff training and says it will create a pipeline of thousands of well-paid and high-quality jobs for Angelenos in the generations to come.
“The Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project really corresponds to the moment in terms of Los Angeles’s immediate and long-term transit needs. We will be working closely with Metro to review our concept for a high capacity transportation solution that could potentially take cars off the road and give the public more opportunities to travel the Sepulveda Corridor, ”said Nicolas Rubio, CEO, North America , at Meridiam.
LA SkyRail Express was also asked on Tuesday to continue developing its concept, Metro said. The board of directors had awarded LA SkyRail Express a $ 63.6 million contract to develop a monorail concept that would be a straight line road mainly within the I-405 routes between the valley and the west side. According to this proposal, travelers would take the monorail from the valley to the west side in 24 minutes. The project is expected to cost around $ 6.1 billion.
“Now that our partner teams are able to refine their concepts, Metro can begin preparing for the environmental phase – the first step in implementing a project that will address our notorious traffic problems at Sepulveda Pass 405 and neighboring communities,” said Metro Board Chairperson Hilda Solis, who is also Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Directors. “This project will offer a tremendous alternative to driving a car in the region and bring new transit options to an auto-centered region where local passengers are at the forefront.”
The environmental assessment process for the project is scheduled to begin this fall.
