Find out which cities in Los Angeles have seen rents rise and fall the most during the pandemic

LA rental data for the past year reflects a broader trend of rising prices in the suburbs. Rents rose in Calabasas and Santa Clarita, but fell in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and downtown LA between May 2020 and May 2021. That’s data from Apartment List, a property listing service, according to Crosstown LA, a local data journalist who examined rents in nine Los Angeles County cities.

“We spoke to real estate analysts and they said residents appreciate the space in front of the local amenities,” says Crosstown reporter Taylor Mills. “They would rather have a larger garden, they would rather have a larger apartment and perhaps pay that extra charge than being closer to restaurants and bar scenes.”

Of the nine cities surveyed, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, and Santa Monica were the three cities with declining rents. Calabasas and Santa Clarita, meanwhile, have had the steepest hikes. Graphics courtesy of Crosstown.
