Long before the first cineplex was built in a mall, movies regularly showed shopping, shoppers, and the eternal acts of browsing, selecting, and buying.
Characters fell in love in stores, met on street corners, dropped all of their boxes and bags, and spent a good portion of a movie picking out a special ring or gift? This is often an important plot point in a film.
Movies set around the Christmas season regularly visit stores, markets, and malls, with exhilaration or drama (finding that hard-to-find toy is a scary experience shared by many viewers).
To celebrate both the season and the mall, My Valley Pass is showcasing several festive films that are in some ways associated with both Christmas and commerce.
And the group that puts the charms of the San Fernando Valley in the spotlight through a variety of pulsating events has found an ideal location for their series: Westfield Fashion Square in Sherman Oaks.
“Movies on the Roof” will be set outside on the mall’s parking garage roof, and while not every movie on the line-up features a shopping scene or element, some will call up the ubiquitous iconic food courts, fancy fountains, and escalators of various malls.
“Miracle on 34th Street” from 1994 is the first film in the series, which opens on December 3rd. “Bad Santa”, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”, “Batman Returns”, “Jingle All the Way”, “and” Elf “will follow on selected nights.
And the cutest cherry on this Christmas cake? All proceeds will be donated to three Valley-based organizations: the neon-tastic Valley Relics Museum, Hope of The Valley Rescue Mission and Overdue, “a collective of individuals who collect trash together to make their communities cleaner, greener, and friendlier “. . “
