Los Angeles is one of the most popular cities in California, and for good reason! It is home to myriad restaurants, hotels, and great places for nightlife. The city also has no shortage of budget-friendly things to do – here are 7 unforgettable activities that are totally free!
1. Stroll along the canals of Venice
Enjoy a piece of Venice on a trip to the Los Angeles canals. Located near Venice Beach, the area consists of four canals. Each is about a quarter of a mile long. Lined with lush trees and beautiful hiking trails, a visit here is a great way to have a quiet afternoon.
2. Relax on Malibu Lagoon State Beach
Malibu Lagoon State Beach is a beautiful sandy beach near the Santa Monica Mountains. It offers a number of reasons that are well worth visiting. Check out the historic Adamson home – open for public tours on Fridays and Saturdays. Learn more about the area at the Malibu Lagoon Museum. Or enjoy a stroll and take in the beautiful coastline along the beach – either way, this is a great way to spend an afternoon!
3. Check out the Hollywood Walk of Fame
If you’re looking for something fun, free, and memorable in Los Angeles, why not check out the iconic Walk of Fame. Located on Hollywood Boulevard, this attraction has drawn crowds for decades. It has the names of various notable and famous people and can be a great place for a picture next to the star of your favorite actor, or just a curious walk to see the stars for themselves.
4. Enjoy the view from the Griffith Observatory
The Griffith Observatory overlooks the city and is the perfect free afternoon getaway! It’s also an excellent place to snap some pictures for Instagram (or just share with family and friends). This is especially true if you can get onto the premises earlier or on weekdays to avoid some of the crowds. The grounds and streets are usually open daily, with the facility itself being open Friday through Sunday. While avoiding the crowds is a bonus to a weekday visit, a weekend visit when the inside of the observatory is open to the public is also a great idea. Not only can you enjoy wonderful views, but you can also visit the telescopes and the planetarium of the observatory.
5. Visit the Hollywood Sign
A visit to the iconic Hollywood sign is practically a requirement on your first trip to LA and can still be a fun outing even if you are familiar with the city. Depending on the desired experience, there are also several ways to display the sign. If you enjoy hiking, there are three hiking trails with different levels of difficulty leading to the sign. The easiest is the Mt. Hollywood route, which is so friendly that it’s also accessible to families with children. There is still an incline in some areas, so narrow-toe shoes are best for this adventure.
6. Visit the Getty Villa Museum
If you’re an art lover or looking for a memorable and educational stopover, check out the Getty Villa Museum. As part of the Getty, it features notable historical works by artists such as. Aside from seeing works of art, be sure to take some time to tour the grounds for yourself – regal white columns and sparkling ponds make the villa itself a work of art, as do the pieces in it. Entry is free but reservations are currently required if you wish to visit.
7. Explore the Venice Beach Boardwalk
Here’s another iconic – and free – attraction in the Venice Beach area! This historic boardwalk has been a popular Los Angeles spot for decades. Enjoy ocean views, lively and varied street performances, and check out some of the public works of art such as murals in the area. The boardwalk also has plenty of places to eat nearby if you fancy a bit of snacks – although this part isn’t free, there are options for most price ranges.
