The Segerstrom High School football team, coached by Joseph Tagaloa, began their off-season program to prepare for the fall season and the season opener against North Torrance on Friday, August 20.

The Jaguars were 2-1 during a shortened spring season that began in March. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there were no CIF playoffs.

So far there has been a return to normal.

“In the past three weeks we’ve been back to a normal off-season format of practice (installation and skill development), speed and conditioning and lifting,” Tagaloa said. “We didn’t manage to do that last season, I’m grateful for that. We have thrown several times this summer in Baldwin Park, Fountain Valley, Crean Lutheran and (Santa Ana) Valley. Every time we had to compete against some quality opponents, we could win all the repetitions. “

While the CIF waived the traditional dead time in summer, Segerstrom took a break, said Tagaloa. The team will resume preparations after the July 4th vacation.

“Our school decided to close and give our athletes a break as many of them play multiple sports and have been grinding since we were released in March,” he said.

“All of our players have the opportunity to take time out. Nevertheless, I am sure that many of them will continue to work independently. We have a tight group of players who are always pushing and holding each other accountable so I suspect they will stay active during our dead period.

“When we come back we have a few more contests with 7 vs. 7 and linemen 1 on 1’s set with Fountain Valley and Beckman planned and then two tournaments in Temecula Valley and Lakeside. We have put together a solid summer offseason with specific development goals on and off the pitch as well as competitions with quality opponents. I look forward to seeing our players progress as a result of their hard work. “

Tagaloa said he expected a number of players to lead the team.

“When we start camp we will have several returning starters like Frankie Gonzalez who will be back at the center for his senior season and our defensive: Jalen Cervantes and MJ Leuma,” he said. “Some of our other key returnees like Free Safety Erik Martinez and Right Tackle Miguel De Loera are looking good but also mentoring a lot of our younger players, which is paying off.

“We have several young faces (Noble Acosta, Mokey Leuma, Sonny Naiuli, Damien Orejel and Isaiah Valdivia) who are fighting for spots so that they can leave their mark in their second season with their contributions. Overall, I’m happy about the mix of young and experienced players who come together and compete for every snapshot this season. “
