Ruth Crespin Obituary (1933 – 2022) – Calabasas, CA

Ruth Moser Crespin, 88, from Calabasas, CA, died peacefully on June 28, 2022, with her children by her side. Born in the Bronx, she was married for 53 years to Solomon (Sol) Samuel Crespin, who died in 2007. They lived in Southern California for over 65 years.

Ruth greatly enjoyed her time with her family. The kids fondly remember camping trips and several road trips across the United States and into Canada. The Crespin kids got a great exposure to nature early on, along with a love of travel. Each of them carries that forward today.

Ruth and Sol traveled extensively after Sol retired, visiting most of Europe, Israel, Poland, Turkey, S. America, Scandinavia, Russia, and China, where in 1974 they were among the first Westerners to see the Terracotta Warriors. She said that they loved meeting people and learning about the communities they were visiting.

When her youngest grandchild, Garrett, was about 2 years old, Ruth learned that a local park (Warner Center, Woodland Hills, CA) was eligible to install a children’s playground as part of the park’s plan. But city officials were reluctant to build this playground without knowing if there was any community interest. Somehow, Ruth found out about this opportunity and learned there was funding for this playground if they could demonstrate interest. So, she and Sol went around the neighborhood, with their 2-year grandkid in hand, knocking on doors, getting petitions signed, and lobbying the local city council. Their persistence paid off: after two years of lobbying, the play area was built! The San Fernando Valley Sun newspaper ran a full feature on their efforts in October, 2003.

Ruth was also a library volunteer at her grandson’s elementary school. After Sol died, she and her sisters Hannah and Mary (both deceased) enjoyed going to the theater and LA Opera. Ruth especially enjoyed taking classes from the Calabasas Senior Center (“Savvy Seniors”) in art history and appreciation from John Paul Thornton, a marvelous teacher.

She leaves behind her daughter Debra Crespin (Lois Harris) of Seattle, WA; son Robert Crespin (Audrey Davis Crespin) of San Diego, CA, and daughter Mandy Green (Zack Green) of Calabasas, CA. Grandchildren include Sienna Crespin, Eli Crespin, Max Green and Garrett Green; many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and friends of the family, along with her buddies from Belmont Village Senior Living in Calabasas, CA.

Ruth was a force of nature – she kept her dry wit and humor to the end. Rest in peace mom.
