Rally in Laguna Beach against coastal oil exploration – NBC Los Angeles

From members of the local city council to members of Congress, the mantra was the same – everyone wants the oil drilling to stop.

Actress and activist Jane Fonda spoke up at an anti-oil drilling rally in Laguna Beach.

“Take a deep breath in and out,” she said. “By the way, this is not a training session.”

She joined elected officials in calling on Governor Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden to end offshore oil exploration.

“We need to make sure our beautiful coastlines are never terrorized by an oil spill again,” said Senator Dave Min, D-Irvine.

Bob Whalen, the Mayor of Laguna Beach added, “We must choose the difficult path to end all new and existing oil drilling off the California coast.”

Fonda said we were facing a crisis.

When she tried to explain how she thought coastal oil rigs should be closed and decommissioned, protesters almost drowned her, reminding her of a trip to Hanoi nearly 50 years ago.

“We will do what we have to do to save our country from communists like you, Jane Fonda,” was heard.

Also on Monday, a congressional hearing was held to discuss the environmental and economic consequences of the 25,000 gallons of crude oil that spilled into the Pacific two weeks ago.

“To tell the truth, it’s been a tough couple of weeks,” said Scott Breneman, a professional fisherman. “People still feel that the fish is contaminated.”

Western States Petroleum Association officials say the 25,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Pacific wasn’t entirely a drilling problem.

“Either way, we need to know all the facts we can learn, but it’s not just about production,” said Kevin Slagle, a spokesman.
