Rain prompts water usage on the beach in Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA – A rapidly changing storm forecast for Los Angeles County caused health officials to issue a beach water use warning for all beaches in the county, including Santa Monica.

Rain is expected from Monday night to Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. This notice is valid until at least Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. This notice can be extended in the event of further precipitation.

Bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash and other public health hazards are likely to enter seawater when it rains, district officials warn, according to Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles district health officer.

Health officials are warning local residents to be aware of these dangers posed by city streets and mountain areas that are likely to contaminate seawater on and around drains, creeks and rivers after rainfall.

People who go into the water in these areas could get sick.
