Mira Costa boys and Redondo girls get top seeds for Bay League basketball tournament

The Mira Costa boys’ basketball team ended four games in eight days with a fourth straight win on Friday.

Led by Nick Lundy’s 18 points, the Mustangs (16-5, 4-1) defeated Palos Verdes 57-26 to take first place in next week’s Bay League tournament.

The Mustangs will bid farewell in the first round when the tournament begins on Monday.

Monday’s first-round games will see Redondo #6 host Peninsula #3 and Palos Verdes #5 host Santa Monica #4.

The Peninsula Redondo winner plays at No. 2 Culver City on Wednesday. The PV Santa Monica winner will visit Mira Costa.

Wednesday’s winners meet Friday for the championship and losers for third place.

“We made the decision to catch up on the games we missed from the holidays when teams were hit by Covid protocols,” said Mira Costa sporting director Glenn Marx. “It gives the players a lot to look forward to.”

The Bay League only played one round (five games) of league games instead of the normal 10.

Mira Costa and Culver City ended 4-1, but the Mustangs earned first place by a straight win.

Redondo is the top seed in the girls’ tournament and will be eliminated in the first round.

In Monday’s first round game, Palos Verdes will visit Culver City. Santa Monica is out due to Covid protocols.

Wednesday’s schedule sees No. 3 Peninsula Mira Costa visit No. 2 and PV Culver City winner visit Redondo.

The winners of the second round meet on Friday for the championship.

WEST TORRANCE 58, TORRANCE 48: The Warriors (14-9, 4-0) secured the Pioneer League title with the win.

Daiki Narimoto and Matthew De Luna each had 10 points. Cole Jacobs finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.

ST. BERNARD 53, SERRA 49: Jason Hart Jr. scored 19 points as the Vikings (14-4, 4-1) clinched the Del Rey League victory.

LaQwon Cole led by 11 points ahead of Serra (17-9, 3-3) and Jeremy Dent-Smith by 10 points.

INGLEWOOD 55, LEUZINGER 54 (OT): The Sentinels (7-8, 2-1) rallied to defeat the Olympians in overtime of an Ocean League game.

Elijah Anderson had 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for Inglewood.

Amir Jones had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Joshua Gardner had 14 points and 17 rebounds.

ROLLING HILLS PREP 51, HARVARD-WESTLAKE 43: Tatum Tamashiro had 20 points and Madinique Shibata had 11 in the Huskies’ win (9-6).

Kaila Woo had eight points and Kyra Prendergast had six points and 13 rebounds.

WATCH COSTA 68, PALOS VERDES 23: The Mustangs (17-4, 4-1) rolled to the Bay League victory led by Kristyn Kim’s hot shooting. Kim shot six from 7 to 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. Winslow Smith had 13 points and Heather Roth finished with eight.

PENINSULA 47, CULVER CITY 44: Jadyn Lee scored 25 points as the Panthers (13-8, 3-2) clinched victory in a Bay League game. Eliana Hall had seven points and 10 rebounds and Kellie Au had nine rebounds in the win.
