Maxine Waters rejects the extension of the LAX gate and cites noise

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles announced Wednesday that she had sent a letter to the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners to oppose a proposed increase in the LAX gate, in which she said the expansion would match more aircraft pollution, traffic and noise for her constituents.

According to the LAWA website, the board of directors should examine the certification of the final environmental impact report for the airfield and terminal modernization project on Tuesday. The Waters office said the vote was postponed to October 7th after receiving their letter.

Waters said in her letter that she is opposed to the net profit from the project’s 12 gates at the airport and will oppose any increase in the number of gates at LAX.

“An increase in LAX capacity of this magnitude would mean a significant increase in the number of aircraft that LAX accommodates, and a corresponding increase in landings and takeoffs, harmful emissions, traffic congestion and noise for my constituents and everyone who lives in LAX work, enable the surrounding communities, “said Waters.” While I support efforts to improve airport and terminal security and improve the passenger experience at LAX, I continue to oppose any attempt to expand the airport’s capacity. “

According to the LAX website, the project will reduce airport-related congestion and traffic on public roads and improve the customer experience at the airport. It also claims that reconfiguring its taxiways and runway exits will result in less aircraft idling and a reduction in air pollution.

Los Angeles World Airports, owner and operator of LAX and Van Nuys Airport, responded to the letter in a statement to City News Service, saying that it “creates the world-class airport our city deserves and is a good neighbor at the same time.” our local communities by providing jobs and opportunities for businesses and residents and promoting sustainability elements in our project. “

“The proposed aerodrome and terminal modernization project focuses on aerodrome and terminal improvements within the airport’s existing footprint, as well as landside (road) improvements that will help reduce local congestion,” LAWA continued. “The project would improve the passenger experience, improve the safety of the airport, reduce traffic congestion in the neighborhoods and on the streets adjacent to the airport, and increase business opportunities.

“This project would result in around 4,700 new long-term employees related to the operations of Concourse 0 and Terminal 9 and thousands of construction jobs. We look forward to continuing to work with all of our partners as we advance our modernization programs. “
