Homeless camps near Playa Vista School scare parents – NBC Los Angeles

The parents in Playa Vista were horrified again when a week earlier a mobile home caught fire on the street near the village while they were taking their children to school.

“Last week it was a tragic death. A fire this week, “said Brenna Vincent’s mother.

Some residents are also concerned: Warehouses are growing near the Westside Neighborhood School campus.

“It’s really sad to tell your child that you don’t care about these people,” said Vincent.

“And I was just shocked and took it as a learning moment, took the time to pray and make sure no one was there,” said Paula Gerez of the neighborhood council. “It just can’t go on.”

Gerez heads a neighborhood council nearby. She discovered the smoke on Monday and came to see what was going on. It turned out that the burning RV was in the same spot a week earlier when a body was discovered on the sidewalk.

“Since when have the rights of the uninhabited superseded the rights of our children, the rights of law-abiding citizens?” Parents Jeremy Dicker said.

Some parents want the new city rules prohibiting camps within 150 meters of the school to be enforced. But they say their councilor Mike Bonin will not support them.

“It just continues to fall on deaf ears,” said Gerez.

Parents worry after a homeless person’s body was found on the street near the school. John Cádiz Klemack will report for NBC4 News on Tuesday, December 7th, 2021.

More than a week ago, Gerez said her neighborhood council had sent Bonin a letter asking her to enforce the new law. So far there has been no response.

“He hasn’t replied to any of our letters since we had him at our last neighborhood council meeting in March,” said Gerez.

In a statement from Bonin’s office on Wednesday, he said he shared the concerns of parents and neighbors and was working to clean up the area.

The city has had some planned cleanups in the area – one of which happened on Wednesday. There are some neighbors here who say the city is doing everything possible to contain this problem.
