Evening Briefing: April 4, 2022

Good evening, SoCal. We’re wrapping up the day for you with the most important stories you need to know and your weather outlook.

Your Weather Planner

Expect windy conditions across Ventura and Los Angeles counties through Tuesday, with wind gusts 30-50 mph across the valleys and 40-70 mph through the mountains.

Clouds will be more patchy and confined only to the coastal communities Tuesday morning. This means more sunshine and warmer temperatures into the afternoon.

While temperatures will be five to 10 degrees warmer than average, enjoy these conditions for now because it will only get hotter for the second half of the week, as a ridge of high pressure builds over the West. This will warm our air mass, along with offshore winds, sending temperatures soaring into record territory Wednesday through Friday.

Today’s Big Stories

1. Arrest made in connection with Sacramento mass shooting

Sacramento police announced an arrest Monday connected with the shooting that killed six people and wounded a dozen others in the heart of California’s capital city as at least two shooters fired more than 100 rounds and people ran for their lives.

Police said they booked Dandre Martin, 26, as a “related suspect” on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and being a convict carrying a loaded gun. Detectives and SWAT team members found one handgun during searches of three homes in the area.

The arrest came as the six victims killed were identified in the shooting that occurred Sunday at about 2 am as bars were closing and patrons filled the streets near the state Capitol.

The Sacramento County coroner identified the three women killed as Johntaya Alexander, 21; Melinda Davis, 57; and Yamile Martinez-Andrade, 21. The three men killed were Sergio Harris, 38; Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32; and Devazia Turner, 29.

2. Reports: Ye withdraws from Coachella, leaving headliner spot open

The lineup for the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival got a shakeup Monday with news that Ye — the rapper formerly known as Kanye West — has pulled out of his headlining spot.

Ye was expected to be the headliner on April 17 and 24 at the two-weekend festival. His withdrawal leaves the event with Billie Eilish and Harry Styles as the remaining headliners.

Travis Scott was also anticipated to appear with Ye, and he is also no longer planning to attend, TMZ reported. Scott has not appeared at a large-scale show since 10 people died during his performance at the Astroworld Festival in Houston as the crowd surged forward toward the stage.

Ye had threatened earlier this year to pull out of Coachella, demanding that Eilish publicly apologize to Scott, insinuating that she had insulted Scott when she briefly halted a show in Atlanta because of a fan who was in distress in the crowd. Ye apparently took it as a reference to the Astroworld tragedy, although Eilish never mentioned that incident or Scott.

3. Judge rules Sheriff Villanueva must testify under oath about deputy gangs

Sheriff Alex Villanueva will have to appear before the Office of Inspector General and answer questions about deputy gangs while under oath and with his testimony transcribed by a court reporter, a judge ruled Monday.

“He should testify under oath and I’m ordering him to do so,” Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Malcolm Mackey said in denying a motion by Villanueva’s attorney, Linda C. Miller Savitt, to quash the subpoena.

Savitt argued the sheriff has always been willing to appear voluntarily before the OIG, but was challenging the magnitude of the OIG’s subpoena power. She said Villanueva does not believe Inspector General Max Huntsman should be “whipping out subpoenas because he thinks he can so he can grandstand.”

The judge disagreed with her argument. “It doesn’t make sense, let’s get it out,” Mackey said in ordering that a date be set for Villanueva’s appearance within 21 days.

4. 1 dead, 2 hospitalized following possible fentanyl exposure in LA

One man died Monday and two others were hospitalized following apparent exposure to a substance thought to have been fentanyl, authorities said.

Paramedics and hazmat teams were sent to the 200 block of West 115th Street about 9 am on a report that two people were exposed to an unknown substance, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, the LAFD reported. Information on his identity was not immediately available.

Two men in their 30s were taken to a hospital, one in serious condition and one in fair condition, the LAFD reported.
