Charlotte Merlee Kuhnlein
August 8, 1931 – January 1, 2022
Resident of Scotts Valley
Charlotte Merlee Kuhnlein went to heaven with her beloved lion on January 1, 2022 to dance in heaven. She was 90 years young. Charlotte was born in Houston, Texas and spent her childhood there. She then moved with her family to the San Fernando Valley, where she met the love of her life, Leo Kuhnlein. They married in 1956 and moved to Boulder Creek in 1964. Here they raised five children and were active members of their community. Charlotte taught catechism at St. Michael’s Church, helped Leo with the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and volunteered for many hours at the UCSC Arboretum and Boulder Creek Museum.
Charlotte especially loved her sports and was known for being quite competitive in anything she did. Nothing made her happier than a good card game and of course the “win” in the end. She was an avid bowler and league secretary at the Santa Cruz Surf Bowl for many years and played bocce at Scotts Valley Skypark. She never missed her granddaughter’s sports game and was known as “Outlaw Mom” in the Highland’s Park Softball League, where she cheered her husband, sons, and son-in-law at every game.
What Charlotte enjoyed most in life were her friends and family. Her 5 children, 6 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter and their husbands and wives were the place where she was most happy. Surrounded by them, their world was complete. She was loved by everyone she met and has made many good friends over the years she lived in the San Lorenzo Valley. We will miss her forever and are grateful for the kindness she taught us.
All are invited to celebrate mass with the family on January 22nd at 1:00 pm at St. Augustin’s Church, 257 Glenwood Dr., Scotts Valley, CA. Masks required. If so desired, donations in honor of Charlotte can be made to the UCSC Arboretum, the Boulder Creek Museum, or the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
