A Medea in Los Angeles

LAS CRUCES – The NMSU Department of Theater and the American Southwest Theater Company will present a borderland story for the modern age. “MOJADA: A Medea in Los Angeles” is adapted from the ancient Greek drama.

It is the story of a family who survived the journey from Michoacan to California. Now, as the family decides what they need to hold onto and what they need to cast aside to thrive in El Norte, they may prosper — or they may risk losing each other and themselves. When faced with impossible choices, what should a mother decide? Shrouded in evocative mysticism, this tale of love, loss and transformation pulses with an escalating sense of danger.

“MOJADA: A Medea in Los Angeles” contains strong language and adult content, according to a news release. The play is performed by NMSU Theater students and community members. The set design is by Jim Billings and the costumes are by Chloe Cappuccilli. The production is stage managed by Mike Wise.

According to the director of the play, Larissa Lury, “MOJADA” brings home how much what we see when we look at one another defines who we are, or who we’re allowed to be in the world.

“If I look at you as a queen, treat you as a queen — you are a queen; if you see me as an ‘alien,’ I become one. It is heinous to think of how easily we can strip one another of our identities, how we can dehumanize with the use of a word; and yet, it’s also empowering to consider that changing the way we see one another can be a real act of transformation,” Lury said.

Performances are of “MOJADA” are from Feb. 18 through Feb. 27 at the NMSU Center for the Arts. For tickets, visit theatre.nmsu.edu or call 575-646-4515.
