God of War Meme compares Atreus to Marvel’s Loki

A fun God Of War meme compares Atreus to the MCU version of Loki, how both use small knives with mixed success against large enemies.

one God of War Fan recently pointed out a humorous similarity between Atreus and the MCU version of Loki, namely their preferred weapon choice when facing a larger and more powerful enemy. After traveling the realms of Norse mythology with his father Kratos during the 2018 reboot of Sony Santa Monica’s God of War, Atreus makes a shocking discovery that changes the course of his fate: his late mother Faye originally wanted him to be called Loki, what means that he is the version of the infamous God of Mischief from the God Of War universe.

Loki Laufeyson is now more popular than ever, thanks largely to Tom Hiddleston’s charming portrayal of the devious trickster god in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While both Marvel and God Of War have benefited greatly from the various characters in ancient Norse mythology, the two franchises differ greatly in their portrayals of characters like Thor. However, Atreus and the MCU version of Loki are similar in many ways. Both share similar character flaws of arrogance and haughty temperament, have a deep love for their late mothers and strained relationships with their living fathers, and their storylines show a contrary relationship to their respective versions of Thor – though in MCU Loki’s case things are much more personal as the god of thunder is his adoptive brother. They also have a similar affinity for daggers when facing a more physically stronger opponent, as a fan recently pointed out.

Just a few days ago, the Reddit user agent of midgard shared a humorous meme comparing Atreus and Loki (via Game Rant). Namely, the user points out that both versions of Loki tend to attack larger enemies with a simple dagger, as shown when Atreus attacks Modi and tries Loki during Kratos’ boss fight against the son of Thor in God Of War (2018) Stabbing Thanos with his own little blade at the start of Avengers: Infinity War. Agentofmidgard playfully suggests that “this kid should stop attacking bosses with knives,” as that approach doesn’t prove to be particularly helpful for either version of Loki.

This is nowhere near the only time fans have compared the Nordic characters of God Of War to their MCU counterparts, as a re-enacted God Of War cover once brought Kratos and Atreus through the Classic Loki and Kid Loki variants from the Replaced last summer’s Loki series. Other fan art has pitted Kratos against the MCU version of Thor even before it was officially confirmed that Ghost Of Sparta will fight a far more vicious (and bulky) version of the God of Thunder in the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok.

Atreus has only recently begun exploring his nature as God, and time will tell whether he will take on the same role as his classic counterpart or his Marvel iteration. In any case, it could do Atreus good to take the advice of Agentofmidgard and not try to attack Thor with a simple dagger as soon as Kratos takes on the thunder god in the next God of War Game.
