Los Angeles businessman Craig Greiwe officially announced his candidacy for mayor on Tuesday, November 16, with a kick-off in Griffith Park.
Greiwe, Chief Strategy Officer of Rogers & Cowan / PMK, comes from business strategy and marketing.
He also recently founded a nonprofit called Rise Together LA, launched last year to “turn Los Angeles politics upside down” and encourage civic engagement among the Angelenos during the city’s 2022 election improve, according to the city’s website.
“LA can and should be a city that works for everyone and not at their expense,” said Greiwe. “I have a real plan to rebuild a city we can all dream of. A city that empowers and empowers people. The question is not how to solve LA’s problems, but who. We Angelenos know that we cannot trust that the people who caused our problems are also the people who solve them. “
Rise Together announced Tuesday that Greiwe had stepped down from its board of directors to run for mayor’s office.
Greiwe is striving to be the first openly gay person to be elected to the office, according to his campaign. He graduated from the University of Southern California and Columbia Law School. He served on the boards of Christopher Street West and the American Dance Movement.
Like many of the other candidates for mayor, Greiwe said his campaign would address the city’s homelessness crisis. His other campaign priorities include: public safety, affordability of housing and government corruption.
Meanwhile, the race to succeed the recalled mayor Eric Garcetti is already lively.
The field includes nearly three dozen hopefuls to date, including LA veteran Karen Bass, and councilors Joe Buscaino and Kevin de Leon, and city attorney Mike Feurer. The field also includes longtime general manager of the San Fernando Valley, Mel Wilson, and Jessica Lall, CEO of the Central City Association of Los Angeles.
Rumor has it that real estate developer Rick Caruso and former LA Unified School District director Austin Beutner are considering campaigning.
The primaries are slated for June 7th, with the top two candidates advancing for the general election on November 7th if no one gets a majority of the votes.
However, Garcetti’s tenure as Los Angeles Mayor is expected to end months earlier. In July, Garcetti, who was appointed mayor, was selected by President Joe Biden as US ambassador to India. The nomination is awaiting confirmation by Congress.
Garcetti had been expected to take over as early as December, which would result in his stepping down from mayor about a year before his term in office.
A caretaker is a likely option to fill the position unless a special election is held at the end of the term.
