🌱 Gun Death At N Orange Grove & Melrose + 90 Min Mid-City Slow Chase

Up and at ’em, Los Angeles; today is National Loyalty Day, which was proclaimed in 1959 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower! Let’s get you started this Sunday with everything you need to know going on today in town.

A man was found shot to death in a car. So, there was a slow speed chase, and it took SWAT to end it. Finally, LA Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer might miss two seasons.

First, today’s weather:

Areas of low clouds, then sun. High: 75 Low: 55. Today’s pollen breakdown shows moderate levels for grass.

Poll:
Who should be the next Los Angeles Mayor? Please share your thoughts! (As of today, Karen Bass leads the pack with 42.1% of your votes, and Rick Caruso is in second place with 36.8%!)

Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. At 6:20 am on Saturday, the LAPD found a man in his vehicle with a fatal gunshot wound. The car was parked near North Orange Grove and Melrose avenues. “Police said residents in the area reported hearing two gunshots at about 10 pm Friday, but no one called police.” (CBS)
  2. Why did it take 90 minutes for the LAPD to catch the driver of a silver sedan on Friday that was “traveling at about 5 to 15 miles per houroften getting out of his vehicle and making erratic hand gestures at police officers?” The slow speed chase went through several Mid-City Neighborhoods. Eventually, a tire fell off, but the driver didn’t want to surrender. SWAT rolled and arrested the driver “on charges of felony evasion and a number of traffic violations.” (NBC)
  3. LA Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer didn’t have a good Friday. Major League Baseball suspended him for 324 games “under the sport’s domestic violence policy.” The athlete announced that he’s appealing the ruling that could bench him for two full seasons. You may remember that a woman accused him of going “too far” during otherwise consensual sex, which the DA declined to prosecute. “She is the third known woman to accuse Bauer of sexual assault.” (ESPN)
  4. the Natural History Museum started the 2022 City Nature Challenge on Friday. It runs through Monday. “Nature lovers who are eager to help science understand our local flora and fauna — only need to observe nearby plants and animals over a few spring days, and share their findings via the iNaturalist app.” Experts will then identify images turned in on the app by Sunday, May 8. On May 9, they share their findings. “You don’t need to participate all four days, but getting to know the iNaturalist app, if you haven ‘t used it before, is a solid idea.” (NBC)
  5. Friday was the Make-A-Wish Foundation‘s annual World Wish Day. However, at NORMS restaurants, the fundraiser continues throughout May. “NORMS will donate $1 of every Cotton Candy Lemonade sale in May!” (NORMS)
