SANTA MONICA, California – The city of Santa Monica is joining the Los Angeles Army Recruitment Battalion and the California Army National Guard for a live streaming and in-person Veterans Day memorial service on Thursday, November 11th at 11 a.m. at North Beach Lot 1 , at. 1550 PCH. Limited places will be available for personal attendance, and the Santa Monica community is encouraged to watch the ceremony live on the city’s YouTube. COVID-19 security measures are in place.
The program will include:
- Publication of the colors
- National anthem
- Comments from Mayor Sue Himmelrich and Councilor Gleam Davis
- Comments from General Curtis Taylor, US Army
- Future soldiers at the swearing-in ceremony
“We are very fortunate to have so many brave men and women serving our country. They deserve our recognition all year round with special honors on Veterans Day, ”said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. “We proudly join the US Army in this honor and ask the community to join us virtually to recognize and honor the veterans in our lives and throughout Santa Monica.”
“The past year and a half have been extremely challenging for our military veterans with the ongoing pandemic and the aftermath from Afghanistan. On Veterans Day, we urge you to help us make them feel special by showing gratitude and honor for their service, ”said Sonki Hong, civil assistant to the Army Minister.
November 11th is the day the US signed the armistice that ended our First World War. Over 100,000 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice and died in the service of their country. Since then, the US has fought six major wars. Each time we urge the men and women of our military to brave the battlefield and fight for our country.
For 21 years, the five pillars of the Veterans Memorial in Palisades Park have honored every branch of our military, the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force, and the Coast Guard. The Santa Monica Veterans Memorial symbolizes peace and healing. In November, the Santa Monicans are encouraged to visit the memorial. The November 11th celebrations will take place on the deck of historic Santa Monica Pier.
All unvaccinated individuals are encouraged to wear masks outdoors and anyone who feels sick or has been exposed to COVID-19 should not participate. Anyone can watch virtual.
