Trunk or Treat planned in Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA – It’s almost Halloween and it’s time to prepare for the Trunk or Treat event in Santa Monica this Halloween weekend.

Families are invited to try a trick or treating in costume in decorated trunks on Sundays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Parking Lot, 1401 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica.

It is sponsored by the Santa Monica Police Activities League. The event is free and costumes are welcome.

Here’s how to stay safe this Halloween

The police also advise people on how to stay safe and enjoy the vacation.

Be safe

  • Cross the street at the corners and use traffic lights and crosswalks.
  • Look left, right, and left again as you cross and keep looking as you cross.
  • Put down electronic devices, hold your head up, and cross the street, not running.
  • Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before they cross in front of them.
  • Watch out for cars turning or reversing.
  • Teach children never to jump on the street or to cross between parked cars.

Plan activities wisely

  • Provide adult supervision for the youngest in your group at all times.
  • Remind older children to stay together and take care of each other when they are not with an adult.
  • Avoid alleys or short cuts and stay on parent / guardian approved paths.
  • Attend a city sponsored event like the Police Activities League’s trunk or treat event, which features family-friendly activities.

Keep costumes creative and safe

  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective strips or stickers and choose light colors if possible.
  • Have children carry glow sticks or flashlights so they can see and be seen by drivers.
  • When choosing a costume, make sure it is the right size to avoid tripping and falling.
  • Avoid costumes that contain makeshift or replica weapons.

Drive safely

  • Drive more slowly and extra vigilantly in residential areas. Kids love Halloween and can move around in unpredictable ways. Take more time to look for children at intersections, median strips, and curbs.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
  • Eliminate all distractions in your car so you can focus on the road and your surroundings.
  • Drive slowly, expect heavy pedestrian traffic, and turn on your headlights earlier in the day to see children from a greater distance.
