The former director of a trucking school in the San Fernando Valley was sentenced to 15 months in prison for skimming over $ 4 million in GI Bill funds.
Robert Wagoner, 59, was sentenced to 15 months in prison and an additional three years under custody on Monday October 18.
Wagoner will also have to repay $ 4.19 million to the United States Department of Veterans, according to the Daily News. Wagoner pleaded guilty to five counts of fraud last year, and his co-defendant Emmit Marshall, owner and president of the Alliance School of Trucking, was convicted a year ago. Marshall will serve four years behind bars and pay compensation as well.
Marshall recruited military veterans to take trucking courses that were post-11th GI law. In the meantime, the tuition fees have been transferred directly to the Trucking School.
During this program, Marshall and Wagoner created forged enrollment certificates and student files containing forged documents.
The program ran from late 2011 through April 2015. During that time, VA AST paid approximately $ 2.35 million in tuition and fee payments for veterans who had never attended class and never intended to attend. During that time, the VA also paid $ 1.96 million directly to the veterans.
