I’ve covered everything from cities to national forests to courts and prisons. I have some pretty colorful war stories from these beats. It’s a very humiliating job. Every day, people trust you with their voice on issues that are important to them, and you must try to live up to that responsibility. If I ever fail, you have to tell me about it so I can do it right. It is important. I’m unsure enough to tell you about some of the journalism awards I’ve won – the Associated Press Award for Investigative Reporting, the California Newspapers Publishers Association Awards for Investigative Reporting, and the Best Special, Children’s Health and Welfare Journalism Award Advocacy awards from the institute and the Society of Professional Journalists for the best corporate stories, best reporting, feature writing, and best environmental history. I think I was trying to collect awards to intimidate editors into chasing me after the stories I want to make. It doesn’t really work. When I work for Patch.com, my office is made up of the cities I cover, Starbucks, and my house, where my coworkers include a nice guy named D’Wayne and two pugs – Monkey and Maggie. If we ever talk on the phone, it might be Maggie you can hear soft snoring in the background. I’m sorry, she just can’t help it.
