The New Year starts with resolutions and optimism from the Santa Monica community

Rhianna Rogers Director, RAND Corporation Center for the Advancement of Racial Equality

My breakup is partly professional and definitely personal. As a multiracial woman, I know how important it is to “level the playing field”. For me, this means bringing people from different cultural perspectives together in order to talk to and learn from one another – in order to develop an intercultural understanding. I decide to create more such spaces. I decide to bring different groups of individuals together to discuss current issues, discuss social issues, promote cultural awareness between different viewpoints, and achieve actionable results. I hope that if we work together to communicate effectively, we can find ways to make the world a better place for all.

I look forward to seeing USC and UCLA compete for the college basketball championship at the end of March Madness in 2022. It could happen because both teams are rated and very good this year. That would be great for our community too!

The heroic Italian wishes Covid to go away immediately so that our beautiful coastal community can live, work and play normally again. Happy New Year!

Nancy Coleman, Chair of NOMA (North of Montana Neighborhood Association)

My wish for 2022: That we all stay safe and sound, successfully master our challenges and, as a country, adhere to the principles of democracy. I hope we will respect our differences and learn to listen, collaborate, and work together. Santa Monica is so beautiful and we are lucky enough to live here. Best for those who live, visit and work here in 2022.

This year I look forward to continuing to educate and create communities that first and foremost honor the courtesy in which we respect the notion that the beliefs of others are different from our own, and that those differences enrich and balance each other; where solution-oriented approaches to problems are fundamentally built on a common basis; where learning and perspective are our main motivations for discourse and civic engagement; where we point the finger at ourselves to create the solutions needed for the world we want to live in.

My resolution for 2022 is to silence anger with love, evil with kindness, greed with generosity, and lies with truth. Credit to Buddha.
