The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office announces that the Van Nuys Division of the Los Angeles Police Department has arrested a man accused of murdering his mother and grandfather

January 19, 2022 — The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office reports that officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Patrol Division arrested 25-year-old Rahmad Kerel Parke on the night of January 15. He was sent to the Los Angeles County Jail. Arrangements are being made to bring him to the Fresno County Jail. Parke was wanted for the January 6 murders of his 90-year-old grandfather, Mel Abdelaziz, and his mother, 58-year-old Melba Abdelaziz.

On the morning of January 6, deputies responded to a call from an injured person who was at a home on Block 5100 of E. Tulare Ave. located in Fresno. MPs discovered that Mel Abdelaziz had died in the front yard and his daughter, 58-year-old Melba Abdelaziz, had died in the home. Since that time, the sheriff’s homicide detective has been looking for Parke.

After a January 14 press conference at which the victims asked Parke to turn himself in, our office received a tip that Parke may be in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles County. Our homicide detectives traveled to Southern California and worked with the LAPD to investigate this information. On Saturday, Parke was seen in Sherman Oaks and taken into custody by the LAPD. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Homicide detective questioned Parke and he was committed to the Los Angeles County Jail.

The two victims began living with other relatives in Fresno in early 2021 after Mel, a man who had served as a church pastor for 70 years, suffered a stroke. Melba moved to Fresno from Los Angeles County to help her sister with her father’s medical needs. On January 6, the two visited the home on Tulare Avenue where Parke resided.

This remains an ongoing investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Jose Diaz at (559) 600-8204 or (559) 448-7089. Valley Crime Stoppers had offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. You determine whether the person who provided the tip is eligible for a bounty.
