Suspects accused of stealing the catalytic converter, police say

SANTA MONICA, CA – A 28-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested in Santa Monica on suspicion of major theft, police said this week.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, officers were investigating an active break into a vehicle in a secured parking lot at Rainbow Carpet Cleaners, 1833 Lincoln Blvd. They heard a grinding noise under a white Ford pickup and saw a suspect with a flashlight in hand.

The suspect tried to escape but was immediately taken into custody without incident, police said.

The officers seized a reciprocating saw, metal blades, and the flashlight, police said.

Alexander Torres, 28, from Los Angeles, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated theft. Officials said he tried to steal the catalyst from the truck.
