Shared Mobility Company Wheels settles consumer protection lawsuit

SANTA MONICA, California – Last week the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office and Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office jointly filed a consumer protection lawsuit with Wheels Labs, Inc. Bicycles. Wheels agreed to pay $ 300,000, a portion of which went to road safety organizations Sustainable Streets and Los Angeles Walks.

While the company is now a licensed operator in Santa Monica’s second pilot joint mobility program, Wheels operated in the city without licenses and permits in violation of the previous program from February to June 2019.

“Like many emerging technologies, shared mobility has rapidly transformed the transport sector. But like all companies doing business in Santa Monica, shared mobility operators must comply with all local laws so that the city can provide safe roads and sidewalks for all and fair competition between companies, ”said Eda Suh, director of the Public Rights Department of the Santa Monica District Attorney’s Office.

This matter was handled by the Public Rights Department of the Santa Monica District Attorney’s Office and the Consumer Protection Department of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. The People vs. Wheels Labs, Inc. case, Case No. 21SMCV01550, has been filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
