Senator Alex Padilla and Congressman Tony Cárdenas chair both the House and Senate on the same day, making history

WASHIINGTON (KABC) – There was a moment in Congress this week that made history.

For the first time, two Latinos from the San Fernando Valley presided over both the US House of Representatives and the Senate on the same day.

Senator Alex Padilla and Congressman Tony Cárdenas ushered in the historic moment on Tuesday.

Both legislators grew up in Pacoima. They went to Twitter to share their excitement.

History was made yesterday when two Latinos from Pacoima presided over the US Senate and House of Representatives. Such a meaningful moment to proudly share with my friend @RepCardenas. pic.twitter.com/SUydktCsCh

– Senator Alex Padilla (@SenAlexPadilla) December 8, 2021

“Such a momentous moment to proudly share with my friend,” wrote Padilla.

Cárdenas called it a “really emotional moment”.

Cárdenas made history when he was the first Latino elected to represent the San Fernando Valley in Congress.

In December 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom nominated Padilla to replace Vice President Kamala Harris in the Senate.
