Santa Monica residents could win Super Bowl Tix by donating blood

SANTA MONICA, CA – Hoping to ease what is reportedly the worst blood shortage in more than a decade, the American Red Cross announced Tuesday that anyone who donates blood in January will be entered into a drawing to win tickets to the Super Bowl and other win prizes.

Everyone who donates during January, National Blood Donor Month, is automatically entered to win two tickets to Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, the Red Cross said. But its only the beginning. Donors also enter a raffle for entry into the official NFL tailgate, tickets to the Super Bowl experience, round-trip airfare to LA, three nights’ hotel accommodation (February 11-14), and a $500 gift card for expenses part .

Donors are also automatically entered to win a Big Game at Home deluxe home theater package and a $500 E-Gift Card for game day dining.

The Red Cross has partnered with the NFL on a generous package to try to attract blood donations amid a pandemic-related blood shortage. The pandemic and resulting blood donation cancellations and staffing restrictions have contributed to a 10% drop in the number of blood donors and a 62% drop in blood donations in schools and colleges, the Red Cross said.

The organization also noted in a recent publication that recent extreme winter weather across the country has also contributed to what it calls a “crisis.”

“Our inventory is at crisis levels,” Raahima Shoaib Yazdani, a spokesman for the Los Angeles area of the American Red Cross, said Tuesday. “Right now, doctors are being forced to decide which patients will receive blood transfusions and who will have to wait.”

The Red Cross said blood and platelet donations were needed to prevent further delays in medical treatment and urged all donors, especially those with blood type O, to donate.

“If the country’s blood supply does not stabilize soon, some patients may not have life-saving blood available when they need it,” the Red Cross said in a joint statement with America’s Blood Centers and the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies .

Appointments to donate blood are available through the Red Cross blood donation app, at redcrossblood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
