Santa Monica is moving to organic waste recycling in 2022

SANTA MONICA, CA – The New Year brings new recycling regulations for Santa Monica businesses and residences.

From January 1st, residents and companies will be asked to separate food from their rubbish and recycling and to throw it into the green organic waste bin without a garbage bag. This means that you throw your waste of products, meat, dairy products, eggshells, coffee grounds and tea bags, baked and dry goods as well as garden waste in the green bin.

For those who don’t currently have a green bio-bin, Santa Monica City residents, businesses, and apartment building managers can set up organic recycling by emailing [email protected]. The city provides a green bin free of charge.

Here’s what the city says you need to do:

“Bring your collected groceries into your green bin every few days. When you’re done, dump the leftover food into your green bin, rinse the container, and use the bottom of your green bin for the next batch before placing leftover food to absorb moisture.

The Santa Monica Organic Waste Program is the result of a new state law, SB 1383, passed earlier this year to reduce methane emissions from landfills.
