SANTA MONICA, California – Santa Monica City Council today submitted a letter to the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization (“Committee”) calling on its members to reject the current Malibu City petition to separate from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District because the terms are not fair to all students.

The Council moved for this rejection after a report prepared by committee staff and an advisor on September 2 concluded that eight of the nine separation criteria set by the committee were essentially not met. This report states: “The analysis clearly shows that the proposed reorganization would have a material negative impact on the financial condition of the remaining Santa Monica USD.”

In its letter, the Santa Monica City Council reiterates its support for separation when conditions are favorable for all students to progress in education. The letter reads: “Such a rejection only ends the Malibu petition. It does NOT preclude communities from working together to create an independent Malibu school district in a way that is fair and equitable for students in Santa Monica schools and that is solid and sound for both Malibu and Santa Monica students offers equal educational opportunities. “

The committee hearing will take place on Saturday 18 September at 9 a.m. The agenda and details of how to attend the virtual meeting are available at https://www.lacoe.edu/Business-Services/News-Announcements/ID/867/Public-Hearings.

At its meeting on Tuesday, September 14th, the Santa Monica City Council will become one 13 items “Supporting the rejection of the City of Malibu’s petition dated October 12, 2020 to split the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District into two separate districts due to the significant negative impact of the proposed reorganization on the tax health of the remaining Santa Monica Unified School District.”

There is currently a petition circulating and information on it can be found here.
