San Marcos Girls Drop Two and Finish Fourth in Division 2/3 at Gold Coast Invite | Sports

San Marcos lost two close games in Division 2/3 of the Gold Coast Invitational Saturday, to Santa Monica 5-4 and to Village Christian 10-8.

Royals junior KC Springer assisted senior Sofia Martinez-Tomatis for a goal that brought San Marcos within one at 5-4 against Santa Monica with three minutes to play. The next possession did not net anything, and Santa Monica was able to run out the clock.

Sophomore Megan Taylor had four saves for San Marcos and Martinez-Tomatis and sophomore Ellie Monson scored two goals each.

“As much as we were hustling and pulling for each other, Santa Monica was doing the same and it was neck-and neck-down to the wire,” said San Marcos head coach Paul Ramsey. “We scored the last two goals of the game but didn’t get the goal that would have sent it into overtime.”

For the third-place game against Village Christian, San Marcos again mounted a second-half comeback. That culminated when Martinez-Tomatis found Monson for a score to tie the game at 8-8 with 1:11 to go in the game.

But Village Christian won the next draw for a quick score, and another for the 10-8 win.

“It was really good to get these games against two top-five teams, and it’s going to pay off when we apply what we’ve learned about ourselves,” Ramsey said. “Certainly completing the comebacks would feel better but we are going to go into the rest of the season finding ways to start quickly.”

Fifth-ranked San Marcos drops to 4-3 and hosts fourth-ranked Orange Lutheran at 6 pm on Tuesday at Warkentin Stadium.
