Prep basketball roundup: Layton boys beat Davis on the road; Ogden girls blow out Logan | News, Sports, Jobs

KAYSVILLE — Layton High boys basketball outscored Davis 14-7 in the second quarter and made that lead stand up in a 56-54 road win to open Region 1 play on Tuesday night.

Brock Mendoza led Layton (87-4, 1-0 Region 1) with 16 points and nine rebounds. KJ Miller scored 14 points with three 3-pointers and Mekhi Martin added 10 points and four boards.

Zach Fisher played all 32 minutes and led all scorers with 22 points for Davis (6-6, 0-1). Kaden Eggett added 15 points while Coleman Atwater had eight points and five rebounds. Davis shot 17% (3 of 18) from 3-point range.

WEBER 59, CLEARFIELD 54

CLEARFIELD — Griffyn Doughty led all scorers with 21 points and four 3-pointers as Weber won at Clearfield.

Hunter Schenck added 17 points for Weber (4-6, 1-0 Region 1). Dylan Ryland and Jaxon Shaw each scored six points.

Austin Mitchell led Clearfield (6-4, 0-1) with 19 points. Trace Hansen scored 15 points and two 3-pointers. Lincoln Church added five points.

BOX ELDER 70, PROVO 61

BRIGHAM CITY — Jackson McKee poured in 26 points to lead Box Elder past Provo.

Cooper Stevenson scored 19 points with three 3-pointers for Box Elder (5-4). Cole Mortensen added eight points.

VIEWMONT 68, WEST JORDAN 46

WEST JORDAN — Viewmont trailed 26-25 at the half, then outscored West Jordan 43-20 after the break to run away with a road win.

Jaxon Heusser led a quartet of Viewmont (5-7) players in double figures, hitting five 3-pointers for 15 points.

Scott Noel added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Mitch Jeppesen scored 12 points, Trevor Green tallied 11 and Zach Robison had 10.

COPPER HILLS 55, SYRACUSE 52

SYRACUSE — Syracuse trailed 23-19 at the half and a fourth-quarter comeback bid came up just short as the Titans fell to Copper Hills at home.

Brevin Hamblin scored a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds for Syracuse (7-2). Kaden Ericksen added 15 points and two 3-pointers.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 67, KENNEDY-CA 50

NORTHRIDGE, CA — Layton Christian 35-15 at the half in a win over Kennedy (California) at the San Fernando Valley Invitational.

Tyrese Lacey led Layton Christian (9-6) with 11 points. Timmie Olubisi and Filip Popovic each scored 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

FREMONT 61, FARMINGTON 44

PLAIN CITY — Fremont went into the break leading 36-12 in a region-opening win over Farmington.

Charli Hunt led Fremont (7-4, 1-0 Region 1) with 14 points. Aly Coombs scored 12 points and Sierra Eddie added 10. Hunt, Coombs and Eddie each made two 3-pointers while Ama Herrick hit three treys for nine points.

Marissa Marchant led all scorers with 15 points for Farmington (6-4, 0-1). Whitney Avei added 14 points and two 3-pointers.

DAVIS 57, LAYTON 32

KAYSVILLE — Kate Richards led all scorers with 18 points as Davis beat Layton in each teams’ region opener.

Richards made three 3-pointers. Kendra Kitchen added 14 points for Davis (8-1, 1-0 Region 1) and Aryanna Bull tallied 10.

Brenley Boydston led Layton (1-8, 0-1) with nine points and Avery Potter scored six.

OGDEN 61, LOGAN 36

OGDEN — Ogden outscored Logan 30-10 in the second quarter to take a 37-13 halftime lead in a big win.

Ashley Christensen led all scorers with 22 points on three 3-pointers for Ogden (6-5), scoring 13 points in the second quarter.

Brynn Smith hit four treys on her way to 14 points. Ruth Larsen added eight points.

SYRACUSE 51, MOUNTAIN CREST 37

SYRACUSE — Avery Sanders scored a game-high 13 points as Syracuse downed Mountain Crest

Maylee Anderson added 10 points for Syracuse (7-4). Both Sanders and Anderson made two 3-pointers. Ariah Peterson tallied nine points.

BOUNTIFUL 62, SKY VIEW 34

BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful led 38-13 at the half in a win over Sky View.

Taylor Harvey scored a game-high 23 points with three 3-pointers for Bountiful (9-0). Jordyn Harvey and Milika Satuala each tallied 11 points and Claire Cook added nine.

GREEN CANYON 74, BOX ELDER 55

BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder led 24-15 after one quarter, but was held to five points in the second frame and six in the fourth in a home loss to Green Canyon

Ashlyn Wight led all scorers with 25 points and three 3-pointers for Box Elder (6-6). Madison Reeder scored eight.
