Police Strike Man In Santa Monica: Report

SANTA MONICA, CA — Two Santa Monica Police Department officers engaged in a physical altercation with a man who they were attempting to arrest at an apartment complex in the city, a video showed.

The video was taken almost a week ago on Saturday, Nov. 12 and depicts the two officers punching and striking Aren Taylor, a 29-year-old man who is believed to be homeless, in the leg with a baton as Taylor struggles with the officers.

According to police, they received a report before 6 pm from the security officer of the apartment complex at the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue who said Taylor was being disruptive and refused to leave the property.

“Taylor approached the officers in an aggressive manner and spat at one of the officer’s face before throwing a cup with liquid, striking the officer on his chest and taking a fighting stance,” SMPD said in a statement.

Taylor was eventually taken into custody and the officers filled out detailed “Use of Force” reports about the incident, according to the SMPD statement.
