(The angel) – pariah, the conceptual fairy tale album by performance artist and composer Cellista, will debut at the Santa Monica Playhouse on October 1, 2021. The event opens with an overture by the Americana band Kristen Lynn & the Foxgloves, who play a series of atmospheric Leonard Cohen covers. The prologue is a performance by critically acclaimed Los Angeles butoh dancer Ibuki Kuramochi, accompanied by Cellista. pariah is performed as a dance film and is set live by Cellista and members of her chamber ensemble Demone Carter, Joshua Icban and Hilary Whitmore.

ABOUT PARIAH
This dreamlike, theatrical album spreads across all media. In the characteristic Cellista style, pariah defies the usual categorization. The project tells the story of Pariah, a woman who was expelled from her community for daring to tell the truth to power. The story follows her exile from her house in Cloture, her encounters with apparitions, love and her eventual acceptance of herself. Cellista explains, “I call my work stage poems. They are resistance art, they are politically engaged, observant and enlightening. Your intention is to tear down barriers between audience and performers in a collective act of witnessing. “
The operetta features works by composers Mazz Swift, Joshua Icban and Peter Colclasure along with performances by actress Dawn L. Troupe, soprano Carla Canales and Hilary Whitmore, rapper Demone Carter, beatboxer Track IX, poet and journalist Gary Singh.
The seven tracks on pariah are 1. “Rubble Field (Grand Mal),” 2. “The Exile”, 3. “Pariah”, 4. “Small Prophecies”, 5. “Laurie Green”, 6. “Pretend” and 7. “Dawn Chorus . “The production was deliberately directed by a 65% female crew, including Heidi Trefethen (SFJAZZ, symphony orchestra musician, Women’s Audio Mission) as lead engineer and Anna Frick (airshow) as mastering engineer. The record was awarded a Grammy rating in the Submitted in the Immersive Audio category.
The publication includes an accompanying book written by Cellista’s father, the esteemed academic Dr. Frank Seeburger (University of Denver, Professor Emeritus), with a foreword by composer Daniel Felsenfeld and illustrations by Jaclyn Alderete. The album cover comes from the British artist Joseph Loughborough.
A well-known record and live performance session musician (who recently made the nickname her full legal name), Cellista has worked with musicians such as Tanya Donelly, TroiBoi, The Dear Hunter, Kiefo Nilsson (son of Harry Nilsson) and Van Dyke Parks worked together, Inara George, Don McClean and others. Cellista plays a carbon fiber cello made by Luis and Clark and a Czech cello from 1885. Pariah is Cellista’s seventh publication.
