From massive blockbusters to black-and-white indies, this year’s crop of Oscar nominees contains no shortage of breathtaking cinematography.


The 2022 Oscar nominees are nothing if not eclectic. From science-fiction blockbusters to semi-autobiographical period pieces from beloved auteurs, the best films of 2021 span the entire spectrum of what is possible in cinema. Any year that features a neo-noir from Guillermo del Toro and a hangout movie from Paul Thomas Anderson is a good one, and that’s before you get into excellent films like “The Power of the Dog” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” One thing that many of these films have in common is excellent cinematography. Hollywood’s best cinematographers, including established legends like Janusz Kamiński and exciting newcomers like Ari Wegner, did beautiful work in 2021, always tailoring their shots to match the artistic vision of their films’ directors.
