Canadian officials announced on Sunday that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 had reached North America, with two cases having occurred in the province of Ontario.
A joint statement from top Ontario health officials Christine Elliott and Kieran Moore said two people who were recently in Nigeria tested positive for the variant.
Contact tracing was conducted to see if others in the country were positive.
Health officials said their strategy is to keep as many Omicron cases as possible from entering Canada.
