SANTA MONICA, CA – Santa Monica residents are advised not to burn anything by the end of Friday as the burn warning has been extended for much of Southland.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District has extended a burn warning to people living in Orange County and the non-desert parts of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties until the end of Friday. The original order was due to expire on Thursday.
Santa Monica residents are advised not to burn wood in a fireplace or in an indoor or outdoor wood stove while the alarm is running. The ban also applies to wood products such as logs, wax and paper, the agency said.
“No incineration day warnings are required to protect public health if the region is predicted to be high in particulate matter,” the agency said. “Smoke from burning wood can cause health problems. Particles in wood smoke … can get deep into the lungs and cause breathing problems (including asthma attacks), increasing the number of emergency rooms and hospital stays.”
Residents of the Coachella Valley, High Desert, and those living in mountain communities above 3,000 feet are exempt from the burn warning.
