A 22-year-old man from Michigan suspected of fatally stabbing a man in Santa Monica whom he knew was in custody Friday after being extradited from his home state.
Santa Monica Police Department detectives worked in conjunction with the Dearborn Police Department to obtain additional evidence connecting Mohamed Abou-Arabi to the killing, according to Lt. Rudy Flores of the SMPD. The evidence was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and a felony complaint for extradition was filed, Flores said.
Detectives flew to Dearborn and worked with the Dearborn Police Department and FBI Violent Crimes Task Force to arrest Abou-Arabi. A search warrant was served at his home, where additional evidence was collected, Flores said.
Abou-Arabi was extradited on Wednesday and booked at the Santa Monica Police Department Jail on suspicion of murder, Flores said.
Santa Monica Police Department officers were dispatched about 2:45 pm on Nov. 2 to the parking lot for Santa Monica State Beach in the 1500 block of Pacific Coast Highway to check the status of a man inside a vehicle who appeared to be dead, Flores said.
Officers confirmed the man was dead with stab wounds to his upper body, Flores said.
An investigation by Santa Monica robbery and homicide detectives determined Abou-Arabi was the suspect and known to the victim, Flores said.
The victim’s name was not released.
