July 1, 2021 – Residents of a house in Santa Monica woke up before sunrise on Wednesday to find a man screaming in their living room, according to police.

The woman and her teenage daughter, who live on the 2900 block of Urban Avenue in the Pico neighborhood, both called police around 4:20 a.m. after being woken by a loud crash, police said.

After seeing the suspect scream in the living room, “They immediately locked themselves in their bedroom and called the police,” said Lt. Rudy Flores, the police spokesman.

Meanwhile, the suspect – later identified as Joshua Absolom Hattam, a 49-year-old man from San Francisco – went through her home looking for unknown items, Flores said.

“When the officers arrived at the scene, they immediately put a fence around the apartment and saw that one of the windows had been smashed,” he said.

According to Flores, they observed Hattam at the residence.

“The officers were able to quickly arrest him and check the status of all residents at the same time,” said Florres.

Hattam has been charged with breaking and entering the Santa Monica Jail.

Anyone with additional information about the incident or suspect should call the Criminal Investigations Division at 310-458-8451 or the Santa Monica Department Guard Commanders (24 hours) at 310-458-8427.
