Lupita Nyong’o, Selema Masekela Bought a Los Angeles House – DIRT

Yesterday, after many months of keeping their dating lives under wraps, Lupita Nyong’o and her boyfriend and partner Selema “Sal” Masekela very publicly confirmed their relationship. And that’s not the only way they are taking their romance to the next level — turns out the couple has also celebrated the holidays by jointly purchasing a multimillion-dollar Los Angeles home together.

Per tax records, Nyong’o and Masekela doled out $4.5 million for their new house, which was custom-built in 2014. The sprawling estate lay in the wilderness of Topanga Canyon, an unincorporated LA neighborhood tucked into the remote and rugged hills between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley.

Tucked securely away behind a steel-gated driveway, on over 2-acres of heavily wooded land resting at the end of a secluded one-way street, the contemporary steel, glass, and cement structure is described as “self-sustainable” in the listing , complete with its own solar, backup power, home automation and filtration systems. There are four bedrooms and five baths in almost 4,300 square feet of three-level living space — all of boasting floor-to-ceiling walls of glass offering up sweeping ocean, hillside and canyon views.

Particularly standing out is a living room sporting a fireplace and sliding glass doors spilling out to a spacious balcony, as well as a wet bar-equipped dining area. A fireside lounge connects to a gourmet kitchen, which is outfitted with bamboo cabinetry, quartz countertops, an eat-in island, and a plethora of top-tier Viking, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances.

Other highlights include an upstairs master retreat complemented by a spa-inspired bath with a soaking tub and two-person jetted steam shower, plus a lower-level media/family room with its own separate entrance, another wet bar and an ensuite bedroom that’s currently being used as an office.

The amenities continue outdoors, where the professionally landscaped grounds are spotlighted by an al fresco entertainment space hosting a sitting area anchored by a fountain, fire-pit, and kitchen setup decked out with a commercial-grade barbecue. There’s also an attached two-car garage and on-site parking for up to 20 vehicles.

Born in Mexico City but mainly raised in Kenya, Nyong’o came to prominence for her debut film role in 2013’s “12 Years a Slave,” which won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Since then, the 39-year-old has appeared in a host of other high-grossing blockbusters (“Us,” the “Black Panther” films, the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy) and has written a New York Times bestselling book ( “Sulwe”).

Masekela, a veteran entertainment and business multi-hyphenate, is probably best known as the former host of ESPN’s X Games, NBC’s “Red Bull Signature Series” and the E! channel’s “Daily 10” news show. An avid surfer, the 51-year-old first came to attention as the only son of Hugh Masekela — the late South African jazz musician and anti-apartheid activist.
