Los Angeles Unified School District to Vote Mandatory Covid-19 Vaccines for Eligible Students | news

Los Angeles’ Unified School District, the second largest in the country, will vote in a special session on Thursday afternoon on making Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for all eligible students.

“By the beginning of the spring semester, every eligible student 12 and older who does not have a waiver will have received a vaccine,” Tanya Ortiz Franklin, member of the LAUSD school board, told CNN subsidiary KCBS / KCAL, adding that the district a vaccine will provide the vaccines.

According to a report attached to an online copy of Thursday’s agenda, all students 12 years or older who attend school in person must receive their first dose no later than November 21 and be fully vaccinated by December 19 Participation in extracurricular activities must be fully vaccinated by the end of October.

The report states that “students with qualified and approved exemptions and conditional admissions” would be excluded from the mandate, but does not provide additional details on possible exemptions.

Board member Jackie Goldberg said the mandate was to “save lives,” reported KCBS / KCAL.

“That’s why there is no measles, mumps and rubella in our schools – because we vaccinate and we need it.”

LAUSD, which serves more than 600,000 students, would be the first major school district in the United States to require Covid-19 vaccines for its eligible students. The district started school on August 16.
