ARLINGTON, Texas — The Los Angeles Sparks became the first WNBA team to reach 500 victories, hitting the all-time milestone Friday night with a 97-89 win over the Dallas Wings.
Nneka Ogwumike had 21 points for the Sparks, the only team she has played for since being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft.
“It’s a part of history, you know?” Ogwumike said of the milestone. “As a professional, these are the only colors I’ve ever worn. These are the only colors I plan on wearing. I just love being part of such a rich legacy. We’re an original franchise.
“There’s so much culture with our team and there’s so much success. There’s ups and downs that I’ve experienced with this team. I’ve played with legends that have their jerseys hanging up. I’m just glad to have been a part of another milestone moment with the Sparks.”
Liz Cambage had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Katie Lou Samuelson added 14 points for Los Angeles (8-11), which also saw Chiney Ogwumike reach 1,000 career rebounds.
“It’s a total team effort, the staff and the team,” Sparks interim head coach Fred Williams said. “I’m just trying to help this team each game to get better and be competitive. To get this for our franchise and put us in the record books, it’s a good feeling right now.”
