Los Angeles Chargers week 5 snap counts against the Cleveland Browns

Impressive.

This game was insane for so many reasons. We’ll definitely be posting some articles and podcasts later this week that delve deeper into the madness that took place at SoFi Stadium against the Cleveland Browns, but now let’s see who played how often.

offense

The only really noteworthy thing here is that Michael Schofield took over for the remainder of the game at RG after Oday Aboushi’s early injury after only 5 snaps. This will be a position to watch over the next few weeks as Aboushi is ready for the year. It will be interesting to see if Schofield will take over RG completely in the future or if Brenden Jaimes will be used at RG to keep Schofield available as a backup with his T / G versatility.

defense

Defensive snap counts week 5

The first big change in terms of playing time was Asante Samuel Jr. He dropped to 40% of the snaps this week, and that wasn’t just because Chris Harris Jr. was back from an injury. Brandon Staley said after the game that they felt that Asante needed some time to calm down. Basically, the rookie had a few rookie moments on lap 2 and the staff decided they needed to use Tevaughn Campbell a little more.

With the team focusing on (and ultimately failing) stopping the run that week, Forrest Merrill played 21% of the snaps to try and get extra starch and beef on the field inside the DL. It didn’t work out in the end, but the UDFA managed to have 2 tackles in its 15 snaps.

Special teams

Week 5 special teams snap counts

Ryan Smith has finally joined the team and in his 11 special team snaps made it VERY clear why the Chargers played up his signature and held him while he recovered. In 11 special team snaps, he had 3 tackles, almost forced a fumble, and even when he didn’t tackle any tackles he stood out as a shooter. With the missed kicks and poor return leg that weighed on the Special Team’s experience, Smith was a breath of fresh air.
