Labor Day weekend 2021: Beachgoers flock to Santa Monica, many are fleeing in the three-digit range inland

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) – Thousands of Labor Day weekend beachgoers flocked to Santa Monica on Sunday and are expected to do so again on Monday.

“Oh, it’s beautiful. It’s just beautiful,” said Sheree Pelaez. “We came down from Northridge to enjoy the fine weather.”

Whether volleyball in the sand, cycling, swimming or just a walk on the beach, the visitors raved about the almost ideal conditions in Santa Monica.

“Fantastic, perfect sky, it’s perfect,” said Claudia Gold. “And it’s so cool down here compared to the Valley. It’s great.”

Beachgoer Rosie Hodge-Adams said Sunday temperatures in Tarzana “felt like 100 degrees. I’m not sure it was that high, but it was super hot.”

Los Angeles County lifeguards carried out more than 5,500 rescues over the summer. Officials urged swimmers, surfers and bodyboarders to be aware of the potentially dangerous conditions in the water.

Increased surf and dangerous rip currents are expected until Monday evening. According to the National Weather Service, which warned swimmers not to stay out of the water or swim near a lifeguard and avoid rock walkways, walls and cliffs, south-facing beaches can be surfed up to 3 to 5 feet.
