At first glance, celebrating the best places to work in Los Angeles may seem like an unlikely moment.
Ultimately, the delta variant is prolonging the pandemic, turning employers’ reintegration plans upside down and causing renewed insecurity and insecurity among many employees.
But if the last 18 months have taught us anything, it is that the workplace is no longer confined to the office, shop or factory.
The smartest companies recognized this early on. They made quick adjustments to ensure the necessary work was still being done, and they put sensible precautions in place to make their teams more secure.
The opportunity to shed light on these companies and their role models for the rest of the business community is at the center of Best Places to Work 2021, the live webinar event hosted by Business Journal last week.
“For me, the biggest takeaway in the past year and a half is the importance of culture,” said Joshua White, Bamko’s senior vice president of Strategic Partnerships, during a panel discussion at the event. “Deliberately cultivating an incredible culture that is what you actually believe, what your values really are, can dictate the outcome and success.”
Throughout the webinar, executives pointed out the importance of their corporate culture at this unprecedented time.
“I love the fact that we have this strong culture that we know trumps strategy, and that we are able to have a speak-up culture that was important during this pandemic,” said Todd Zavodnick, CEO of Dermavant Sciences Inc.
Unsurprisingly, flexibility is a common part of the various recipes for success.
“We took this step back to reconsider some standards. We’re opening the door to some flexibility … with our people, ”said Tanya Sukhu, partner in health and life sciences at West Monroe Partners. “While it was an unexpected change, it was a great opportunity for the company to take that step back and really think about what people need.”
Companies honored at the event included West Monroe, Prologis, FloQast and WE O’Neil Construction Co. in the Large Enterprise category.
Medium-sized companies that received awards included Mission Cloud Services, Dermavant Sciences, Bamko, and VHA.
Kardent Design, Vaco Los Angeles, Rising Realty Partners and Outer topped the list of winners in the Small Companies category.

Ernst & Young recently announced the winners of the annual Greater Los Angeles Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, which recognize the executives of high-growth companies. Among those honored were Henrik Fisker and Geeta Gupta Fisker, founders of Fisker Inc .; Ariel Kaye, founder of Parachute; Tim Ellis, co-founder of Relativity Space; and Katerina Schneider, founder of Ritual.
