LA District Attorney files burglary charges over SMPD arrest

On Jan. 18, 2022, the Los Angeles Attorney’s Office filed a 459 PC count of burglary charges against Alonza Badu Martinez, a 32-year-old homeless man who was arrested by Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) officers after he found himself inside was a residence.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on January 14, 2022, SMPD officers responded at the 1000 block of 6th Street to investigate a burglary. The reporter informed the interlocutor that when he returned home he noticed that his apartment had been completely ransacked and he heard noises from inside. Officers entered the unit and located Martinez. He was taken into custody and taken to the Santa Monica Police Detention Center.

SMPD officers discovered that Martinez had an active probationary warrant without bail from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
