Academically, he is Associate Professor of Medicine in the UCLA Lymphoma Program, which is part of the Department of Hematology and Oncology in UCLA’s Medical Department. Dr. Timmerman is also a member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center’s tumor immunology programs and the UCLA Molecular Biology Institute.

Dr. Timmerman received his Medicaid degree from the prestigious Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts in 1991. He then completed his internship (1991-1992) and specialist training in internal medicine (1992-1994) at the San Francisco School of Medicine at the University of California in San Francisco, California. In 1998 he completed his fellowship in hematology-oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California. Before studying medicine, Dr. Timmerman received his bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry and physiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his master’s degree from Boston University.

After completing his training, Dr. Timmerman passed the board of internal medicine (ABIM) board exams in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. The American Board of Internal Medicine is a 501 nonprofit, self-appointed organization certified for the evaluation of physicians who practice physicians who practice internal medicine and its subdivisions. The American Board of Internal Medicine is not a member society, educational institution, or licensing agency.

Hematology is the branch of medicine that studies the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. It involves treating diseases that affect the production of blood and its components such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels, spleen and the clotting mechanism. Such diseases can include hemophilia, blood clots (thrombus), other bleeding disorders, and blood cancers such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma.

Oncology is the study of cancer. The field of oncology encompasses three main areas: medicine, surgery, and radiation. A medical oncologist treats cancer with chemotherapy or other drugs, such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and surrounding tissue during surgery. A radiation oncologist treats cancer with radiation therapy.

Dr. Timmerman is licensed in California and has hospital privileges at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California and the UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center in Santa Monica, California. He is a member of Southern California Super Doctors® (2010-2012) and is actively involved in research with a particular interest in the treatment of non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas, tumor immunology and the immunotherapy of lymphomas.
