Northrup, James F.
SANTA MONICA – James Franklin Northrup was born on June 3, 1934 to Edward and Debra Northrup. He died to eternal life at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital on August 25, 2021.
Jim grew up in the Atwood neighborhood of Madison, Wisconsin, and graduated from Madison East High School in 1952. He worked for the National Guardian Life Insurance and won many performance awards. In 1978 he moved to Santa Monica, California, and continued to serve clients as an independent insurance broker. After his retirement, Jim continued his community service and worked with disadvantaged people. He was a member and leader of the Santa Monica Unity-by-the-Sea Church and Eagles Club, and was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers. He kept fond memories of his Madison roots and returned often to visit family and friends.
Jim loved walking around Santa Monica, which meant he stopped frequently to chat with neighbors and friends. Jim led his life on the principle that life works better with optimistic ideas.
Jim supported local businesses. He attended city council meetings. He volunteered to work at the tables on election days. Jim wrote letters to local and national politicians to get involved in government and bring about change.
Jim was funny, kind, and nice. He is and is greatly missed. A big thank you to his 30-year-old friend Dr. Gerald Rafferty from Santa Monica, who has been tremendously supportive of Jim and his family in his final days and beyond.
Jim leaves behind his first wife, Teresa (Castgna) Northrup; Children, Jim, Jeff, Linda Christensen (George), Laura and Barry (Loretta); his brother Walter Northrup (Karen) of St. Paul and his girlfriend Bonnie Diekow; Grandsons, George Christensen, John (Sarah) Christensen, Collin (Mary Strause) Northrup, Amanda and Megan Northrup; Great granddaughter Estella Grace Northrup; Cousins, nephews and nieces; and many friends in Madison and Santa Monica. In death he was preceded by his parents Edward and Debra Northrup; and second wife Barbara.
There will be a private memorial gathering in Santa Monica later this year.
The family suggests making memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
