Inside a $ 30 million Calabasas mansion with a giant outdoor chess set – Robb Report

If, like almost everyone else, you saw The Queen’s Gambit last fall, then you might like a new listing in Calabasas. It’s a sprawling house reminiscent of over-the-top Italian mansions, but there is also a life-size chess game outside. You can brush up on your Sicilian defenses – when you have $ 30 million to spare.

The house is being sold by Robin Gibson, who oversaw the construction of the building for six years. Gibson, the founder of St. Tropez, a tanning brand, traveled to Lake Como during the development process of the house to observe and be inspired by the palaces there.

For the design, she hired the architect William Hablinski, who is known for creating magnificent, Mediterranean-inspired villas. His Villa Firenze project sold for $ 51 million earlier this year, and the house he designed for casino mogul Steve Wynn last hit the market for a whopping $ 110 million.

Gibson’s home doesn’t cut corners either. The main residence is 15,745 square feet and features travertine fireplaces, Julia balconies, and custom moldings. It has five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, but there is also a separate guest house that adds two more beds and two bathrooms to the property.

Inside there is a library, a theater, exercise and massage rooms and a wine cellar that can hold up to 5,000 bottles of vino. On the upper deck, a retractable glass roof offers spectacular views of the San Fernando Valley.

It’s 1.2 acres in total, so there’s plenty to do outside as well. When you’re not busy playing a round of chess with the two-meter tall chess pieces, you can swim in the infinity pool, practice your game on the putting green, or have an al fresco dinner with friends in one of the many fun rooms.

There is also a five-door garage on the property as well as manicured gardens designed by landscape architect James Dean. And the best thing about it: Since it is adjacent to a nature reserve, you won’t have too close neighbors for the foreseeable future.
